Twitter Unveils New Ad Platform

Apr 13th, 2010 Posted in News, Social Media, Technology, Twitter | No Comments »

Twitter announced Tuesday that it would start its much-anticipated advertising platform , one day before its first-ever developers conference.

The ad platform is called “Promoted Tweets” and will start rolling out Tuesday afternoon, beginning with promoted tweets within Twitter Search results.

Twitter mentioned in their blog post that it is launching the first phase of Promoted Tweets platform with a handful of innovative advertising partners that include Best Buy, Bravo, Red Bull, Sony Pictures, Starbucks, and Virgin America — with more to come. Promoted Tweets are ordinary Tweets that businesses and organizations want to highlight to a wider group of users.

Promoted Tweets will be clearly labeled as “promoted” when an advertiser is paying, but in every other respect they will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand. Promoted Tweets will also retain all the functionality of a regular Tweet including replying, Retweeting, and favoriting. Only one Promoted Tweet will be displayed on the search results page.

Twitter will further discuss this program and what it means for the Twitter ecosystem at two-day developer’s conference on Wednesday called “Chirp.”

The homepage also features a set of algorithmically-selected Top tweets that automatically appear every few seconds. It also highlights a random sampling of suggested sources; hover over any of them to see a profile summary and their latest tweet.

Twitter has mentioned in their blog post that “All of our recent changes embrace the notion that Twitter is not just for status updates anymore. It’s a network where information is exchanged and consumed at a rapid clip every second of the day.”

Twitter’s New @Anywhere Platform

Mar 16th, 2010 Posted in News, Technology, Twitter | No Comments »

Twitter is taking another step to integrate with the rest of the web with a new platform called @anywhere. Operators of third-party websites will be able to plug in @anywhere to integrate some basic Twitter functionality without requiring their users to navigate away from a page.

When you visit a website that supports @anywhere, you’ll be able to follow any Twitter account associated with that site without navigating away to the profile at Twitter.com.

Rather than implementing APIs, site owners need only drop in a few lines of javascript in the website to integrate with @anywhere.

The Twitter Blog stated that the Initial participating sites will include Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo! home page.

Future announcements regarding the platform will come from the @anywhere Twitter account.

Twitter.com attaches Location to Tweets

Mar 12th, 2010 Posted in News, Social Media, Twitter | No Comments »

Twitter on Thursday activated a location-tagging feature that will allow users to add their location information with the updates posted on the site.

Every day, millions of tweets are created. These little bursts of information are about anything and everything—they make Twitter a hub for discovering what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world. A recent burst of interest in location sharing applications, games, and services has many Twitter users excited about appending geographic data to some of their tweets.

Not everyone wants to add their current location to a tweet so this feature is off by default and must be activated to use.

Check out How To Tweet with Your Location to learn how you can turn it on.

People who choose to add this additional layer of context help make Twitter a richer information network – location data can make tweets more useful.

There are many ways location data can be useful when paired with tweets.

For more information on how this feature works, check out About the Tweet With Your Location Feature.

Twitter Opens Up to Real-Time Search with 7 Startups

Mar 2nd, 2010 Posted in News, Social Media, Twitter | No Comments »

Twitter announced on its official blog that it is granting a handful of new search startups partners full access to all its data feed of public tweets— a.k.a. the “Firehose”.

According to the blog post, the company is “happily turning the Firehose on for some new partners focused mainly on exploring the incredibly rich field of real-time search and discovery.”

Earlier the full spectrum of data available in the “Firehose” was previously only available to Yahoo, Google and Microsoft. With this announcement, Ellerdale, Collecta, Kosmix, Scoopler, twazzup, CrowdEye, and Chainn Search will all join on as partners with Twitter and have access to the entirety of Twitter’s data stream in real time. These companies range from funded startups to part-time, one-person operations so theye came up with a fair way to license access that scales with their business.

With access to the full Firehose of data, it is possible to move far beyond the Twitter experiences we know today.
